Review: Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land [Penguin Random House]

This psychological thriller by Ali Land is surely one for all who love exciting stories with twists!

I really liked the way Good Me Bad Me was written and how Land lures the reader into the different subplots while the major plot develops. The story is exciting for so many other reasons too!

I liked the fact that it’s written from the perspective of a teenage girl, Milly. It was a nice break from typical protagonists I’ve come across before such as middle-aged male professors or women with deep-set problems.

Making Milly the protagonist gives the book a sense of childlike appeal. As a reader, you’re shown Milly’s experiences throughout the process leading up to the trial.

Land manages to capture the teenage experience accurately by taking the readers through the different ordeals Milly faces. Something that stood out was the bullying by Phoebe and other girls and how it turned out in the end.

I also enjoyed the push and pull relationship between Milly and Morgan. I was actually more interested in what would develop from Milly’s relationship with Morgan than with Phoebe. Either way, these subplots keep me intrigued throughout.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the storyline. It was really exciting to read. It flowed well and the subplots within the story kept me hooked while the bigger plot slowly developed.

I can tell the characters were really well thought out, as the characters seem to each have their own quirks which add even more depth to the story.

Did anyone else see elements of Ali Land’s personal life coming into Milly and her mother’s story too??

Overall, Good Me Bad Me is a great debut novel! I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who loves thrillers!
